Octavio Briseño-Martinez: The Light That Still Finds Its Way In

Octavio Briseño-Martinez has been a patient at Gracelight Community Health since 2015. He first started his care at the Echo Park clinic before transferring to Westlake North to continue seeing Dr. Pham, a provider he deeply trusts.

Originally from Mexico, Octavio came to the United States in his early twenties, hoping for a better future. What started as a temporary stay became home. “I fell in love with this state,” he said. “And I found love here too.” He smiled softly as he spoke about his late wife, who he met after moving to Los Angeles.

Octavio is now managing diabetes, hypertension, and back pain. He shared that his care team at Westlake North has made a real difference in his health and peace of mind. “Dr. Pham and Marie Shin are very kind and humble,” he said. “Their hard work and dedication have helped me feel better.”

Recently, Octavio has faced challenges with his immigration status, leaving him afraid to leave his building. He’s spent months staying inside, only stepping out for appointments or essentials. But he said Gracelight gives him a sense of safety. “You all make me feel safe and welcomed,” he said. “Even with everything going on, coming here makes me happy. You’re worth the risk.”

Despite the uncertainty around him, Octavio continues to find comfort in the care and kindness he receives at Westlake North. “As long as I can, I’ll keep coming,” he said.
