When Miriam Alcovera Guevara walks into Gracelight Community Health, her presence brings a sense of calm to the space. At 67 years old, she carries herself with quiet grace, greeting staff and patients alike, always with kindness. Despite the challenges she’s facing, including a recent cancer diagnosis, Miriam continues to show up with humility, patience, and hope.
For Miriam, Gracelight has been more than a clinic. It’s been a source of motivation and stability in a time of uncertainty.
“Gracelight has helped motivate me to stay consistent with my appointments, even when life throws obstacles in the way,” she shared. “The generosity, respect, and patience of the providers here have helped keep my glucose levels under control.”
Her main provider is Dr. Shapan Debnath, but during one of her recent visits, she was seen by Dr. Chan instead. What stood out wasn’t just the flexibility, but the ease and trust with which she received care from another provider. Her comfort and confidence in Gracelight’s team allowed her to feel supported, no matter who was in the room. That kind of trust doesn’t happen overnight—and it speaks of the strong connection she’s built with the entire care team.
She remembers what healthcare used to feel uncertain, rushed, disconnected. At Gracelight, she says, it feels different.
“I’ve never had a complaint. Everyone listens. I feel safe here.” That sense of security has been especially important as she navigates a serious diagnosis. “Even though it’s scary, being here makes me feel hopeful.”
What’s meant the most to her is not just the medical care, but how each person treats her—with attention, with care, and without judgment.
“One time I came in with some questions, and the clinic manager took the time to hear me out. I wasn’t expecting that. They didn’t just help me with my health; they also helped me understand things about Medi-Cal and Medicare that I didn’t know. Because of that, I was able to get the medication I needed.”
Today, Miriam is helping a friend transition their care to Gracelight, just like she once did. She says it feels good to pass along something that has helped her so much.
When asked to describe Gracelight in one word, Miriam paused and smiled.
“Perfect,” she said.
