Lorena Cuevas: Healing Begins with Feeling Seen

Since joining Gracelight Community Health in May 2023, 55-year-old Lorena Cuevas has experienced a level of care that stands out from her past experiences. What began with uncertainty and stress turned into a journey of support, healing, and connections, something she didn’t expect to find so close to home.

When Lorena’s Medi-Cal coverage was unexpectedly cut off, she found herself overwhelmed and unsure of where to turn.

“I didn’t know what to do,” she recalled. “I cried so much and felt completely lost.” But at that low point, someone at Gracelight stepped in to help. Within days, she was supported through the process of restoring her coverage and getting back on track with her care. That moment left a lasting impression.

Her provider, Dr. Kyi, along with Karla at registration and other team members, helped Lorena feel cared for in ways that went beyond the clinical. The support didn’t stop once the paperwork was resolved. Staff followed up with phone calls just to check in or remind her to take her medication—small acts that made her feel remembered and respected.

What Lorena appreciates most about Gracelight is the welcoming environment.

“I don’t feel ignored,” she said. “Even the staff in leadership roles make time to say hello. Everyone feels approachable here. It’s not like other places where people seem too busy to acknowledge you.”

That culture of kindness and humility is what keeps her coming back—even from a distance.
“I travel from past Pico Rivera just to come here,” she said with a smile. “It’s worth it.”

When asked to describe the staff at Gracelight, Lorena didn’t limit herself to just one word.
“Humble. Kind. Family. Comfort.”
