Finding Comfort and Care: Lorena’s East 3rd. Story

At Gracelight Community Health, we understand that healthcare is more than just identifying and finding solutions to patients’ medical concerns—it’s about connection, trust, and care. Lorena Ixcal, a 49-year-old patient originally from Guatemala, shared her journey with us, a testament to the trusting relationship she has built with Karina Flores, one of our dedicated health advocates at our East 3rd Street location. Lorena has been a part of the Gracelight family since the clinic first opened its doors, and her story is one of resilience and gratitude.

Lorena, shared how transformative her journey with Gracelight has been. “This is the first time I’ve had a primary doctor,” she explains. “I’ve also had access to an oncologist and a dentist for the first time in my life. It’s been a blessing for me and my family.” Growing up in Guatemala, where access to healthcare was a luxury her family couldn’t afford, Lorena never had the chance to establish routine care. She recalls how a referral from her son’s pediatrician led her to Gracelight. “When the clinic was still under construction, I was told to keep an eye out. The day it opened, I walked in, and I’ve been here ever since.”

For Lorena, Gracelight isn’t just a healthcare provider—it’s a place where she feels supported and seen. “The clinic helps me stay on top of my health,” she says. One of the ways our team has impacted her life is by monitoring a lump in her chest with regular mammograms and ultrasounds. “They’ve made sure I stay healthy, and I feel safe knowing they’re keeping an eye on me.”

Gracelight’s commitment to its patients extends beyond medical care—it’s about creating a sense of family. “They always remind me of my appointments, which I appreciate so much,” Lorena says with a smile. “Life gets busy, and sometimes you forget. They’re always there, keeping us on track.” When asked to describe the clinic in one word, Lorena didn’t hesitate. “Family,” she said. Her story reminds us of the importance of community and care in healthcare. “I never had this growing up. In my country, we were just trying to survive. Coming here to a place like Gracelight has changed everything for me and my family.”

Lorena’s gratitude extends beyond her own experience. “If everyone cared for each other the way this clinic does, the world would be a better place.” Her words reflect the heart of what Gracelight Community Health strives for every day: to not only provide care but to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve. For Lorena, Gracelight is more than a clinic—it’s a lifeline and a home. Her journey is a testament to the transformative power of compassionate healthcare and the strength of community
