39 year old Esteban Arias Villegas arrived in the United States from Guadalajara, Mexico in May 2025. Seeking asylum and a chance at stability, he never expected that his first experience with the healthcare system would come so quickly or feel so human.
He came to Gracelight Community Health in urgent dental pain, unsure of what to expect.
“I thought it would be too expensive, and I didn’t have services like this back home,” he said. But thanks to Leticia Urbina in the dental department, he was given a same-day appointment and referred for medical approval, which he received in just three days. “My experience with Gracelight has been amazing. I never knew that the United States had so much to offer and right at your fingertips. I’m very thankful to the dental department for all their help and last-minute accommodation. I felt treated like a human, not just another number like we say back home. Now I understand why so many people come to the U.S. for the American dream.
Esteban was cared for by Dr. Mitchell, who explained the dental procedures clearly and helped him feel calm, even though he admitted he was scared and wanted to run out of the clinic at first.
“The dental nurses were so kind. Not just one—there were many who helped me,” he said. “And don’t forget to mention Mr. Carlos, the dentist. He was cheerful, outgoing, and made me feel like I was in good hands. You all have a great team here.” But Esteban’s gratitude extended far beyond the dental chair. He remembered the extra support he received from our health care advocates
“They asked if I had a visa or passport. I said no, and they gave me a lawyer’s number. Because of that, I now have my work authorization and am on my pathway to residency. They didn’t have to help me, but they did, and even helped my friend, her sister, and her nephew with Medi-Cal, a PCP change, and a physical. Thank you to Dr. Olivares and Nurse Brenda, who were so welcoming. As well as the young woman at the front desk on the first floor—window 3—I think her name is Karla. Yes, Karla. Thank you to all of you.”
When asked to describe the staff at Gracelight, Esteban smiled and replied,
“Best friends. Ángeles de mi guardia.” “Yes, please tell the manager they have a great team. And to the top person at the clinic, thank you so much for hiring people with big hearts. Thank you, Gracelight.”
