Edith Valiente: Empowered to Keep Going

Edith Valiente thought taking control of her health felt impossible at one point. At 51 years old, she has been a patient at Gracelight’s Hollywood clinic for six years, but when she first walked through the doors, she wasn’t sure there was much hope left. Her blood sugar levels were dangerously high, and she felt like she had already lost the battle.

“I thought, ‘What’s the point? I don’t think there’s a solution for me anymore,’” Edith recalled.

But something changed after she met the team at Gracelight. It wasn’t about getting treatment—it was about feeling like she mattered. Every visit reminded her that she wasn’t alone, that her health was worth fighting for, and that there were people ready to help her every step of the way.

One of those people was Dr. Oliva Ramirez, whose kindness and encouragement made all the difference.

“She is such a wonderful person,” Edith said. “She motivated me so much, and I appreciate her from the bottom of my heart.”

The connection between Edith and Dr. Ramirez has played a huge role in her journey. Dr. Ramirez didn’t just treat Edith’s diabetes—she made sure Edith understood it. Through their conversations and check-ups, Edith became more motivated to stay informed, take her medications, and keep up with her appointments. That ongoing support gave her the confidence to take charge of her health instead of feeling overwhelmed by it.

At Gracelight, these kinds of relationships go far beyond doctor and patient. The trust and connection that our providers and staff build with patients create a sense of community and care that lasts. It’s what makes the difference between just going to an appointment and feeling like someone is truly in your corner, rooting for you every step of the way.

Diabetes is a major health concern in the Latino community, often due to a lack of education about the disease and the importance of maintaining a healthy diet. Having providers like Dr. Ramirez and Dr. Wu, who are passionate about addressing diabetes and its impact, is a powerful way to help break the cycle. Their dedication not only supports current patients but also helps prepare the next generation to be more mindful of their health and how they take care of their bodies.

For Edith, Gracelight became more than just a clinic. It became a place where she felt seen and cared for, where every interaction reminded her that she wasn’t just another patient—she was part of a community.

“They don’t let you give up on yourself,” Edith said. “They push you to keep going, to keep fighting. I wouldn’t go anywhere else. Gracelight is the best.”

When asked to describe the team in one word, Edith couldn’t settle on just one.

“They are the best, and I hope that never changes,” she said with a smile.

Her journey is a testament to what’s possible when care goes beyond medicine. It’s about connection, encouragement, and making sure people like Edith know they are worth the fight.
